Thinking outside the grid

Centralised, large scale power generation has it’s advantages, the main advantage are the economies of scale when using fossil fuels. With renewables the advantages of decentralised generation dominate: no long distance transmission eases strains on the grid, less transmission losses, increased reliability due to increased number of generators. Local control over cost, consumption and generation. Ease of scalability.

Also there is an element of fairness: Sharing the burden of generation. Instead of burden an entire area with a large scale power station and it’s auxiliary operations such as mines spoiling an entire area; decentralised renewable power generators are less intrusive and are more acceptable to everyone who uses energy.
